An LED driver converts the incoming electrical supply into the electrical output required by a compatible LED light source. Selecting the correct driver is essential because different LED products can require specific voltages, currents and power ratings.
The two principal types are constant current and constant voltage LED drivers. Constant current drivers regulate the current supplied to compatible LED modules, while constant voltage drivers provide a fixed output voltage, commonly for suitable LED tape, strip and other low-voltage lighting systems.

LED drivers are used with a wide variety of lighting, including LED downlights, cabinet and undershelf lighting, LED tape, architectural lighting and commercial LED fittings, depending on the electrical requirements of the individual product.
For lighting that requires brightness control, a dimmable LED driver must be compatible with both the LED load and the chosen dimming or control system. A driver should not be assumed to be dimmable unless this is specifically stated by the manufacturer.
When choosing a replacement LED driver, check the output voltage, output current, wattage or load range, dimming method, physical dimensions and connection requirements against the original driver and LED light source. Matching wattage alone is not sufficient to establish compatibility.
For damp, exterior or exposed installations, check the driver's IP rating and permitted installation environment. Any required ventilation, mounting clearances and operating temperature limitations should also be considered.
