A consumer unit, commonly referred to as a fuse board or fuse box, forms a central part of an electrical installation, distributing the incoming electrical supply across individual circuits while housing the appropriate circuit protection devices.

Choosing the Right Consumer Unit
When choosing a consumer unit or fuse board, consider the number of circuits, number of available ways, circuit protection arrangement, main switch configuration, surge protection requirements and capacity for future expansion.
Compatibility is particularly important. RCBOs, MCBs, SPDs, RCDs and other circuit protection devices should be selected for use with the relevant manufacturer's consumer unit system rather than assuming devices from different ranges are interchangeable.
For replacement or upgrade work, the requirements of the existing electrical installation should be assessed before selecting a new consumer unit. Selection and installation should comply with the applicable requirements of BS 7671 and be undertaken by a suitably competent person.
