PIR'S, MICROWAVE SENSORS & PHOTOCELLS
PIRs, Microwave Sensors & Photocells
Automate lighting operation with our range of PIRs, microwave sensors and photocells at Order Electrical, providing different methods of controlling lighting according to movement, occupancy and ambient daylight levels.
PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors detect changes in infrared radiation associated with movement within their detection area. They are widely used to automatically operate lighting in locations such as corridors, stairwells, toilets, offices, entrances, workshops and outdoor areas.
Microwave sensors use microwave technology to detect movement and can provide a different detection characteristic to conventional PIR controls. They are commonly incorporated into commercial lighting systems and can be particularly useful in warehouses, corridors, stairwells, offices and other areas requiring automatic occupancy-based lighting control.
Depending on the product and installation environment, microwave detection can be sensitive to movement through some lightweight materials. Detection range, positioning and sensitivity settings should therefore be considered carefully when specifying and commissioning the sensor.
Photocells operate according to surrounding light levels rather than occupancy. Often referred to as dusk-to-dawn or daylight sensors, they can automatically switch compatible lighting as natural light levels rise or fall.
Photocell control is particularly useful for building exteriors, car parks, pathways, entrances, perimeter lighting and security lighting, where lights may need to operate automatically throughout the hours of darkness.
Using suitable sensors can also help reduce unnecessary energy consumption by ensuring lighting operates only when an area is occupied or when natural daylight is insufficient, depending on the control strategy selected.
When choosing a lighting sensor, consider the detection method, detection range and angle, mounting height, time delay, daylight threshold and maximum switching load. Compatibility with LED drivers and other electronic lighting loads should also be confirmed from the manufacturer's specification.
